Storms? What storms?

We've had strong winds and rain and the news is full of floods and power cuts, yet no one's mentioned climate change. Saw a link to a BBC news report on Twitter, where some woman was complaining to the Prime Minister that "not enough has been done...". Doubt it's occurred to her that it'll be a losing battle to stop the flooding, long-term, if nothing is done about global warming. How much energy is she using, without consideration?

Anyhow, this was the view from my window this afternoon, just before a sheet of stratocumulus hid the blue sky. Deceptively calm and peaceful. It won't last.

PS: Forgot my camera the other day. Being driven through the next village, soon after a hail shower, saw storm clouds in the south, with torrential sheets of rain. To the west, clear blue sky. It all changes so quickly.

Today's news is all about the high winds, tidal surge and coastal flooding. Soon after I took this, it got darker, blew harder, and started to rain.

Pink evening

A brief flash of pastel colour at the end of a grey day, reflected from the sunset. This was the view from my window.

St Jude's Storm, 28th October 2013

Was woken just before 8am by beeping electrical equipment triggered by a power cut. This was taken through my window. You can just see a faint rainbow. Doesn't look like much, but it was blowing a gale.

The power cut lasted 54 hours.

Bright ball of cloud

Looked across the gardens behind my house and spied this big bright ball of cumulus partly hidden by a sheet of stratocumulus and some cumulus fractus.

Fair weather clouds

A few cumulus fractus below wispy cirrus in a mostly blue sky on a fine day. Should have got my washing done.

Flat-bottomed cloud

This was taken soon after 5pm, as it got cooler, when temperature inversion flattened the bottom of some cumulus mediocris, spreading them out.

Brilliance amid the gloom

After an overcast sort of day, a gap revealed this burst of brightness at about tea-time.

Strange skies

These passed overhead, moving east, with a few rumbles of thunder, at about 10-ish this morning. The first time I've seen mamma clouds in Suffolk.

My Cloud Book says,

They are caused by powerful downdraughts, when pockets of cold, moist air sink rapidly from the upper to the lower parts of the cloud, reversing the usual cloud-forming convection of warm, humid air. Their shapes and forms can vary considerably, from near-spherical pouches to tubular, rippled or merely undulating globules, arranged in cellular formation.

Brightness

Some billowy cumulus clouds below a thin layer of cirrostratus this morning, creating a hazy effect. This was taken through a window, as you can see.

Reflected sunset

Some heavy showers today. An elderly friend who came for tea arrived soaked to the skin and had to borrow some dry trousers.




The sun shone briefly just before sunset, reflected off distant cumulus clouds.

Fine weather at last

It's been a long cold spring, but this sky promises a change in the weather.

Combed cirrus

Looks like someone has run a comb through this cirrus.

Snowy spring

Three days after the spring equinox and almost British Summer Time, yet we've had more snow. Twitter was full of grumbles about the disruption of travel plans and cancelled social activities, but the worst casualties were the young man who died last night after trying to walk home from the pub in the cold, and the farmers who can't get to hungry livestock that haven't been fed for days.

But it looks pretty.

Almost shining

Late afternoon, and the sun tried to shine.

Drat!

Fooled by morning sunshine and a local weather forecast that didn't predict rain, I hung a lot of washing out to dry. This was the view across the fields from the next village as I drove into town.

Spring sunshine, if not spring weather

It looked deceptively bright and spring-like today, with bright sunshine and lots of cumulus humilis and fractus about.

Sunshine and snow showers

Some big cumulonimbus clouds passed overhead, shedding snow, sleet and hail-like lumps. Changeable afternoon. One minute bright sunshine, the next deep gloom.

A friend said that the edge of this cloud at the bottom, the dark bit, looks like a man trying to kiss the telegraph pole.

No shopping today

I was going shopping but I changed my mind, even if I have run out of chocolate. This was the view from my window this afternoon.

Pastel colours at sunset

A little earlier, the sky was rather dull. Sunset brought out some pastel colours.

I've neglected this blog lately, having hunkered down indoors through the cold weather. This was taken through a window. Maybe things will begin to warm up now, though I'm not putting my thermals away just yet.

On days like this, I feel sorry for the birds
